‘Franchise cricket for some countries is more lucrative’ - Pat Cummins asks for specific windows of franchise, Test cricket

Australia’s star skipper Pat Cummins recently came forward to discuss a heavily invested topic. The World Cup winner asked for the fixing of cricket’s relentless schedule. Cummins added that specific windows for domestic and international tournaments could go a long way for players. 

Cummins highlighted how franchise cricket holds more importance for some countries, and if he played more franchise cricket, he would have to spend more time away from representing Australia. 

Furthermore, the Aussie skipper talked about how decision-making for the players will be a lot easier if a specific timeframe is given to every format of the sport. 

“Franchise cricket for some countries is more lucrative, more appealing than international cricket. If I went and played franchise cricket, I could probably be away for a half or a third of the amount we are for Australia,” Cummins said MCC World Cricket Connects 2024.

"In Australia you know Test cricket is from November to January and basically no other cricket is going to get in the way of us playing Test cricket then. If we can have specific windows for IPL but then also Test windows, that makes the decision-making for the players a lot easier,” he said.

Furthermore, a stalwart in women’s cricket and Australia women’s multiple-time World Cup champion, Meg Lanning, came forward to opine that a player cannot do everything at once. She stated that it might feel doable in the beginning, but one tends to feel burnout when playing every format alongside franchise cricket over some time. 

"The reality is in my view that you can’t be playing everything these days, both internationally and domestically as one of the top players. I think it’s too much. And while it might seem fine initially and for a few years, I think it’s just inevitable that you’ll get burnt out doing that," Lanning said.
