The Indian Premier League added a new spice to the T20 format with the introduction of the Impact Player Rule in 2023. The rule revolutionized the game forever as it allowed teams to replace an already existing player in the playing XI with a player from the bench allowing the replaced player to both bat and ball during the game. However, the Impact Player couldn’t captain the side.
Chennai Super Kings’ Tushar Deshpande became the first-ever Impact Player in IPL history during the opening fixture of the 2023 season against Gujarat Titans. However, the beginning didn’t go as planned for the right-arm seamer as he leaked 51 runs in 3.1 overs picking just one wicket.
The first ‘Impact Player’ to have a real impact on the game was Rajasthan Royals’ Dhruv Jurel who brought his side to the cusp of a win with his quick-fire cameo of 32* (15) against Rajasthan Royals in Match 08. As the tournament went on, there were only a handful of instances when the Impact Player managed to change the course of the game with their performances.
With the 17th season of IPL beginning from April 22, ten franchises will have another opportunity to use the Impact Player rule to their advantage and the rule is set to bring a lot of tactical changes in the playing XI. The upcoming edition is expected to be another riveting tournament set to bring the crowd to the edge of their seats as Impact Player Rule continues to revolutionize the T20 extravaganza.
