Gujarat Titans have been dealt a major blow in the opening encounter of the ongoing IPL 2023 as their star batter and the latest addition to their squad Kane Willaimson was seen in agonising pain after he hurt himself near the boundary skirtings in an attempt to save a certain six.
The incident happened on the third delivery of the 13th over of Chennai Super Kings' as Ruturaj Gaikwad connected a well-timed pull shot off Joshua Little's bowling and the ball was flying over the square leg fence but Williamson who was patrolling on the boundary ropes leapt in the air and saved the ball from going for a maximum. He was seen hobbling in immense pain afterwards and was taken outside the field for a medical examination.
Kane landed awkwardly on his right knee in an attempt to pull off a blinder but he failed to hold on to the catch but made sure that it didn't go for six. The physio of Titans was seen attending to him soon after the incident happened.
Williamson's fitness holds a lot of significance for Titans as he is one of their trump cards. Titans had acquired his services at the IPL mini-auction in December 2022 after he was released by his erstwhile franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The defending champions paid a good enough price of INR 2 crore to rope in the Kiwi. He is extremely crucial for Titans' batting as he can play that anchor role and also possesses the ability to switch gears and take the attack to the opposition when the situation demands the same.
As far as the game is concerned, Chennai are heading towards a solid total and hence it is likely that Williamson will be replaced by Gujarat Titans' Impact Player as and when they decide to take one. He will most probably be replaced by a capable batter and that will to an extent fill the void.
