The 62nd game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 featured a clash between the defending champions Gujarat Titans and the Aiden Markram-led Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday, May 15.
As Gujarat Titans registered an emphatic victory against Hyderabad, the performances of Shubman Gill and veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami made quite a few heads turn. After Gill’s brilliant ton in the first innings, Shami came all guns blazing during the run chase.
The 32-year-old struck thrice right in the powerplay itself, dismissing the likes of Anmolpreet Singh, Aiden Markram, and Rahul Tripathi. Furthermore, Shami showcased his class once again by sending Heinrich Klassen back to the pavilion. Klassen was looking dangerous and was batting for 64 runs in 44 balls before the 32-year-old sent him packing.
In the post-match presentation, Shami was asked by Ravi Shastri to reveal the secret behind his success and even was questioned about his food intake, to which he had a hilarious reply. "Gujarat mein hu, mera khana nahi milega na." (I'm in Gujarat, I won't get the food I like), Shami said in the post-match presentation.
To make sure that he did not hurt the sentiments of the home fans, Shami also opined that despite not getting the food he prefers, he was still enjoying the Gujarati cuisine.
As Gujarat registered a 34-run victory, Shami had four wickets to his name and only conceded 21 runs in the four overs he bowled. His brilliant spell also saw him reclaim the IPL purple cap, as he sits with 23 wickets to his name in 13 matches. Despite being tied with teammate Rashid Khan, Shami claimed the purple cap as he boasts a better economy.
The win also saw the defending champions become the first team to qualify for the knockout stages of the IPL 2023. With 18 points in 13 matches, Gujarat sits atop the points table and would look to maintain their winning ways as they play their last match of the group stages against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday, May 21.
