Shubman Gill's performance in the ODI series against Australia has been nothing short of spectacular. The young cricketer, after narrowly missing out on a century in the opening match in Mohali, bounced back with a vengeance at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. On a batting-friendly track with relatively shorter boundaries, the flamboyant batter showcased his prowess and etched his name into the record books with his sixth ODI century. However, not everyone seemed pleased with his century. The former Indian cricket legend, Virender Sehwag, expressed his desire to see more from the talented Punjab batter.
Sehwag, known for his aggressive batting style and playing marathon knocks, was left somewhat dissatisfied, believing that Gill had the potential for an even larger score. He pointed out that scoring big runs is relatively easier for young players in their prime, as their bodies can recover quickly and allow them to contribute on the field. The former India opener emphasized that making the most of one's form is crucial, as age can pose challenges in maintaining such high levels of performance.
“He missed out last time but ensured that he got his hundred today, but I would still say that the form he is in he should have scored 160 or 180. He is now of just 25. Had he scored 200 today then he wouldn't have become tired and could have fielded as well. At 30, he would have found it difficult because he wouldn't have recovered. So, it is better to score big runs now,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.
Gill is on the verge of breaking numerous records
The year 2023 has undeniably belonged to Shubman Gill in the world of cricket. He has been a dominant force in ODIs, amassing an impressive tally of over 1200 runs, making him the leading run-scorer in the format this year. The 24-year-old's performance has been accentuated by the remarkable feat of securing five centuries, with four of them achieved on home turf. This achievement now places him on par with cricketing legends Ricky Ponting and Pakistan's Zaheer Abbas for the most centuries by a batter at home in a single calendar year.
Moreover, the Punjab batter is inching closer to breaking the iconic Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most runs in the 50-over format in a single year. With the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023 on the horizon, the cricketing fraternity eagerly anticipates Gill's potential to surpass this monumental milestone, as he continues to dazzle with his remarkable talent and exceptional form on the field.
