Bangladesh’s national selector Hanan Sarkar has decided to step down from the position just days before the completion of his tenure. Sarkar was appointed in March 2024 and his tenure was supposed to end on February 26. But the veteran has opted to quit before the due date as he aspires to see himself in the coaching setup in near future.

Sarkar confirmed his decision in an official letter to Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on February 1. He also added he wished to complete his tenure but had to take the decision for the betterment. Before becoming a national selector, he was an age-level selector and worked as U-19 selector for almost a decade.

"Yes, I have handed them (board) the letter yesterday to step down from the selection committee. I wish to have a career in coaching, and as a result don't want to continue as part of national selection panel. If BCB [Bangladesh Cricket Board] feels that they can include me in as a coach in their set-up, in that case, I am ready to consider it," said Sarkar as quted by Cricbuzz.

"There are no other reasons behind this decision. Everything was going really great. But I felt that coaching is my future career. I feel that I can contribute more from this position to Bangladesh cricket through coaching," the former cricketer said.

"What I was contributing as a selector was fine. But what I really felt was I should choose coaching as a future career for the long run. I was thinking about the matter for quite a long time. Now I have proceeded with it officially," he added.

It is worth noting that, the 42-year-old has played 17 Tests and 20 ODIs for Bangladesh in his two year international career. When he was the selector of U-19 team, the 2020 batch went onto lift the trophy. The U-19 team also won their maiden Asia Cup title in 2024 under his watchful eyes. With all the success in the grassroot level, he was named as the national selector by BCB.
