The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced Harry Brook as the new captain in both ODIs and T20Is in place of Jos Buttler on Monday (April 7). Notably, this will be a big challenge for the young England star who last led the team in a five-match ODI series against Australia in 2024.

Things took a dark turn after the abysmal performance of the English team in the 2025 Champions Trophy, where they failed to win a single game in the group stages. This also led to Buttler resigning as the leader in white-ball formats following the Champions Trophy exit. Brook, in the five games he has led England, has won two matches while ending on the losing side on three occasions. Besides, he has also led the England U19 team in the 2018 World Cup. The star batter has expressed his views on getting the chance to lead the side after the English board confirmed their decision.

“It's a real honour to be named England's white-ball captain. Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team. To now be given that chance means a great deal to me,” Brook was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

“I want to thank my family and coaches who've supported me every step of the way. Their belief in me has made all the difference and I wouldn't be in this position without them. There's so much talent in this country, and I'm looking forward to getting started, moving us forward, and working towards winning series, World Cups and major events. I'm excited to get going and give it everything I've got,” the 26-year-old batter further added.

Brook’s white-ball record

Brook is no doubt one of the top batters in the Test format right now, and though his record in ODIs and T20Is is decent, it still doesn’t match up to the class and talent he has shown as a player. Brook has so far played 26 ODIs and 44 T20Is. He averages 34 in 50-over cricket and has a strike rate of 146.15 in the shorter format.

Brook was also part of England’s squad in the triumphant T20 World Cup in 2022. It will be important for the top-order batter to improve his record in the two formats to prove himself as a capable player in white-ball cricket.
