Harry Brook made 56 runs off 73 balls in the first innings of the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Manchester. He built a crucial partnership with Jamie Smith, which helped England take the lead on Day 2. In the absence of Ben Stokes, Brook had the responsibility to deliver in the middle order, especially as Smith does not have enough experience of playing international cricket.
Brook has performed well and has also earned praise from batting great Kumar Sangakkara. The former Sri Lanka cricketer stated that he loves watching the 25-year-old bat for he likes the simplicity of his technique. Sangakkara added that Brook has good awareness, advising him to continue in the same manner.
“He is such a good player. I love watching him bat, I like the simplicity of his technique and the intent he bats with. It is always about scoring runs and there is nothing complicated in the way he does it,” Sangakkara told Sky Sports.

“He has got good awareness about how he wants to play cricket and I think the best thing that can happen for Harry Brook is to be told, 'just keep batting the way you are, do not get confused with anything else',” he added.
Since his debut in 2022, Brook has been a key component in England’s Bazball system. He has played 15 Test matches so far in his career and scored 1378 runs at an average of 59.91. The Yorkshire-born missed the India tour earlier in the year, the only Test series England have lost since Ben Stokes took over captaincy.
When it comes to the Test against Sri Lanka, England are leading by 23 runs after Day 2. Smith played a crucial unbeaten knock of 72 runs before rain played spoilsport. He would hope to resume Day 3 in a similar fashion to help England build a stronger lead.
