The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 has put the Indian team in a precarious position, where they enter the fifth and final Test of the series in a must-win encounter at the SCG, in Sydney. India's shambolic performance has brought the leadership style of skipper Rohit Sharma under massive criticism from fans and experts alike. Under Rohit's captaincy, India haven't won a single match out of the last six games they've played.

In fact, talks have started around the India captain stepping down from the position after the end of the ongoing series, and having over the reins to someone else. Adding to this, former Australia cricketer and coach Darren Lehmann, has suggested the name of Jasprit Bumrah as a suitable contender to don the captain's hat for India in the red-ball format.

Lehmann further talked about the skills of Bumrah as a bowler, and the impact he brings to the dressing room with his presence. The former cricketer opined that after Mitchell Johnson's 2013-14 campaign in The Ashes, Bumrah is the most impactful bowler he has seen.

“I presume he (Bumrah) is the next captain when Rohit finishes. He did a really good job in Perth. He is the best bowler I have ever seen live, I have seen Wasim Akram, Glenn McGrath and all but I have not seen a bowler have impact like him in a single series like Jasprit Bumrah has since Mitchell Johnson in 2013–14 Ashes win. Said Lehmann as quoted by Hindustan Times.

“This is very similar as Bumrah already has 30 wickets. He has been outstanding to watch. He will do well when he gets a chance to lead India," the 1999 and 2003 World Cup winner added.

The Ahmedabad-born has had an incredible year in the red ball format where he has taken 71 wickets in the 13 matches he has played and has a phenomenal average of 14.29, which is the best in a single calendar year for a bowler with minimum 70 wickets in men's internationals.
