'He bowled rubbish today' - Matthew Hayden slams Pat Cummins after shambolic day in Nagpur

Former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden has slammed Pat Cummins’ side after Australia’s disappointing day one in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar trophy in Nagpur. The visitors after winning the toss, elected to bat first and were rolled over for just 177 runs in the first innings, while India are currently trailing by just 100 runs after making 77/1 at the end of the play. 

Ravindra Jadeja, who was making his comeback after the 2022 Asia Cup, was the main wrecker-in-chief, taking five wickets and conceding 47 runs in 22 overs. Meanwhile, Ravichandran Ashwin bagged three wickets by giving away 42 runs in 15.5 overs. India’s pace duo, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj shared a wicket each. Marnus Labuschagne was the top scorer for the Aussies with 49 runs off 123 balls.

"Pat Cummins, in particular, got nothing out of the surface, nothing through the air. It was tougher to bat against the new ball and those two early wickets of Khawaja, was really one of the setback for Australia. Those three ducks and three guys for one. That's what you got to avoid when you play in India," said Matthew Hayden in an interaction with Star Sports. 

"Pat Cummins, the captain of the side and he bowled rubbish today. He was too full and he didn't know where he was going with his line and length. If you look at the pitch map, it was way too much that was straying there as well. And it was just a matter of that momentum because Rohit Sharma was standing right at the other end. It does get away from you know," the Australian legend further added.

Coming to bat in the first innings, the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma got off to a flier by hitting three boundaries in the first over of the Indian innings and converted the start into an unbeaten fifty, scoring 56 off 69 deliveries with nine fours and a maximum. Rohit was joined by Ravichandran Ashwin as the nightwatchman after KL Rahul got out to Todd Murphy after scoring 20 off 71.
