'He enjoys batting in India' - Glenn Maxwell backs skipper Aaron Finch to find form before T20 World Cup
Australia will play three T20Is against India from 20th of September.
The poor form and fitness struggles of Aaron Finch forced the Aussie skipper to retire from ODI cricket. However, with the T20 World Cup coming soon, Finch would be desperate to get back in form and find momentum as Australia get ready for their title defence. His opening partner David Warner will not be part of their upcoming T20I tour to India and thus, the 35-year-old will have to take extra responsibility to help the team get a good start.
His teammate Glenn Maxwell believes that the captain will certainly show glimpses of his form because he loves playing in the subcontinent. Now, even though Finch has been struggling lately, his captaincy skill remains sharp as ever. Australia were not the favourites but he still helped the team win the T20 World Cup last year. Even in the last series against New Zealand, fans once again saw how good a tactician he is!
“He'll certainly enjoy having these games in India, he enjoys batting there,” said Maxwell. The 33-year-old added, “Once he gets out on the field and takes control of the team out there, he's been able to focus on the job at hand well and that's a credit to him. Obviously, it wasn't the easiest time for him in one-day cricket but his attitude has never changed. He was brilliant with the strategy side of things. It's a very underrated thing in T20. Don't discount his value as captain."
Aaron Finch bats for David Warner to be Australia’s next ODI skipper
After Finch decided to retire from ODI cricket, the discussions began on the potential next captain of the Australian team. Currently, David Warner along with Steve Smith, Pat Cummins and Alex Carey are the favourites to lead the side. However, with Warner, the Australian board has still not cleared the southpaw to captain any of the Australian sides after the 2018 ball-tampering scandal.
Despite that, Aaron Finch and Test captain Pat Cummins batted for Warner to take up the important role. “I think they are revisiting what that looks like. He’s someone I’ve played under a few times for Australia when he’s had the opportunity to captain, and he’s been fantastic. He’s an unbelievable tactical captain and someone who at the time the guys loved playing under,” Finch said on Triple M radio.
With the ODI World Cup taking place in India next year, Warner might be the man to take charge as he knows the Indian conditions well. The 35-year-old is expected to sit with the Australian officials soon and sort out the matter before CA announces the next captain.
