Indian skipper Rohit Sharma suffered a blow to his left thumb while fielding in the second ODI against Bangladesh. KL Rahul took over the leadership reigns once Rohit left the field after the latter had gone for scans during the game.
The 35-year-old did not take part in the remainder of the game until he showed immense courage and walked out to bat at No. 9 during the run chase. He tried his heart out, scoring an unbeaten 51 off 28 balls to take India close to the target. However, they fell short by five runs in the end and conceded a 2-0 lead to the hosts.
Rohit has subsequently been ruled out of the third and final ODI and his participation in the Test series also remains in doubt. With the Test series starting on December 14, the Indian skipper hardly has time to recover and return to the squad. He has flown to Mumbai for medical consultation and BCCI secretary Jay Shah recently confirmed it through a statement.
"The BCCI Medical Team assessed him and he underwent scans at a local hospital in Dhaka. He has flown to Mumbai for specialist consultation and will miss the final ODI. A call on his availability for the upcoming Test series will be taken later,” Shah stated in a press release.
Indian team plagued with injuries
Alongside Rohit, India have a long list of injuries with pacers Kuldeep Sen and Deepak Chahar also ruled out of the third ODI. Chahar was not completely fit in the second ODI where he bowled just three overs due to a hamstring injury while Sen did not play the second ODI due to a stiff back.
Further, Mohammed Shami suffered a shoulder injury and was withdrawn from the ODI squad, with India calling Umran Malik as his replacement. Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja are also yet to recover from their injuries and alongside Shami, they remain unlikely to be named in the squad for the upcoming Test series.
Meanwhile, Kuldeep Yadav has been added to the squad for the third ODI against Bangladesh while Abhimanyu Easwaran, Navdeep Saini and Saurabh Kumar are in line to be named as replacements in the Test squad.
