Former New Zealand cricketer Andre Adams has suggested that Kane Williamson could just hand over the captaincy reigns to someone else so that he can regain his form and focus on his batting. The right-hander has played very few games since the T20 World Cup 2021 and his elbow injury has not helped the cause either. The 32-year-old has now returned for the Australia ODIs, where he hasn’t found his groove yet with scores of 45 and 17.

Kane Williamson is a vital cog in the New Zealand setup and is currently the all-format captain, which has seemingly kept him under pressure. While many cricketers now have started to move on from one format to concentrate on the other formats, Williamson could possibly consider doing so as per Adams.

Kane’s been through a difficult time for the last 12 to 18 months: Andre Adams

Adams mentioned that Williamson has not contributed much with the bat to the team over the last year or so. He added that playing all three formats is a good choice but also highlighted the need for Williamson to focus more on batting than just captaincy.

“He hasn’t scored the runs you would expect — he’s been through a difficult time for the last 12 to 18 months. Everything’s changed over the last couple of years, with family and kids. It changes your perspective a little bit. It’s good to see him back… (but) perspective changes as you get older. When you are young you can do all three formats no problem, travel the world,” Adams was quoted as saying by Newstalk ZB’s Jason Pine.

“Maybe it is better to have a new captain and let Kane (Williamson) bat — I don’t think Kane has an ego in that aspect, he will just do what is best for the team," he added.
