'He has not been proactive on many occasions'- MSK Prasad criticises Rohit Sharma's leadership in Border-Gavaskar Trophy

The struggles of Rohit Sharma as Test captain have been the topic of discussion for all the experts. The Indian legend has looked completely out of sorts in the Australia series and is receiving a lot of criticism for his leadership and performances which have been underwhelming so far.

The Boxing Day Test is so far still in favour of the Aussies after an incredible century from Steve Smith and the late flurry of wickets which have put the Aussies ahead with the Indian team currently at 164-5 and trailing by 310 runs at the end of Day 2. Though a lot has gone wrong for India in this Test match Rohit Sharma’s performance has been disappointing as well. The India skipper was dismissed for just three runs after top edging a pull shot to Scott Boland at mid-on off the bowling of Pat Cummins. This performance has led to a lot of harsh criticism from former BCCI selector and Indian cricketer MSK Prasad.

“We raised the topic about Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. Heading into this series, we had a three-match series against New Zealand. It was pathetic. Never happened in the history of Indian cricket that we lost back-to-back three games, and Rohit was totally sorted out. He had absolutely no runs in that series. And here, he didn’t play the first game. Bumrah led the side very well. So he comes after the backdrop of continuous failures," said Prasad as quoted by Hindustan Times.

“I personally feel that it has got a direct impact. If the captain comes into some sort of form, that has a direct impact on the side. And he comes after a series of failures and that has clearly shown in the way he led the side. He has not been proactive on many occasions. If you see, in this Test match itself, he had 11 overs bowled by Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah, especially when Sam [Konstas] was going hammer and tongs. That has been the case with his captaincy,” Prasad added.

Rohit has scored only 22 runs in the three matches he has played so far and is averaging only 5.50 this series. This is even worse than the performance against New Zealand where he had scored 91 runs at an average of 15.16.
