'He is a tactical expert' - Salman Butt welcomes BCCI's idea of appointing MS Dhoni as T20I coach with an eye on T20 WC 2024

Former Pakistan batter Salman Butt has welcomed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s move of giving MS Dhoni a coaching role in the Indian team with a keen focus on T20Is. Butt called Dhoni a ‘tactical expert’ and said that he would definitely take Indian cricket to greater heights.

There were reports circulating on Tuesday, November 15 that the BCCI is looking forward to make use of MS Dhoni’s tactical experience in the shortest format with a focus on the 2024 edition of the T20 World Cup that will be played in the Caribbean and the USA.

"Indian cricket will benefit significantly from MS Dhoni's involvement and presence. Because of the type of captain he has been, he would be a big asset when it comes to designing tactical plans for the team," said Salman Butt while speaking on his YouTube channel.

"He is a tactical expert with an excellent temperament. He is an asset to them, and they should indeed create a capacity for him to contribute," he added.

"With his kind of a brain, players will be benefitted. Indian cricket will move ahead. You can't beat experience, you can't beat the person who has done things himself," the ex-Pakistan skipper further added.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni was appointed as the Indian team’s mentor for the last year’s T20 World Cup in the UAE. However, the Men in Blue had a forgettable campaign as they crashed out in the Super 12 losing their opening matches against arch-rivals Pakistan and New Zealand respectively.

It also needs to be noted that India’s last major ICC title triumph came under MS Dhoni’s captaincy which happened to be the Champions Trophy in 2013. Ever since that tournament, India have been reaching in the knockouts on a consistent basis, but have failed to go all the way.

The recent instance was the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia where the Men in Blue did reach the semis, but a humiliating 10-wicket loss to England  halted their progress in the competition.
