‘He plays golf right-handed’ - Sean Abbott reflects on David Warner batting right handed against India

The three-match ODI series between India and Australia is well underway; having won the first two matches, India has managed to clinch the series in a comfortable manner. The win would serve their confidence a lot of good, with the ODI World Cup 2023 looming around the corner. With the second ODI done and dusted, India put forth a brilliant performance as they registered a brilliant 99-run victory in a rain-marred clash. However, one of the biggest talking points of the game was veteran Australian opener David Warner batting right-handed against Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. 

Warner scored 53 runs in 39 deliveries, and he looked set on the crease. He aimed to bat against Ashwin right-handed. However, the same led to his doom, as he was dismissed soon after. In the same vein, the Australian pacer, Sean Abbott, came forward to give an interesting take on Warner batting right-handed in a crunch pressure game. Abbott stated that as the Southpaw plays golf right-handed, he tried to experiment in a bid to break Ashwin’s rhythm.

“I think if David Warner is just going to sit there and bat left-handed, Ashwin is not going to miss his length too often. With the ball spinning so much, he’s got the one that goes the other way, the straighter one, and all the variations along with that. Davey just thought he had to change it up,” Sean Abbott was quoted as saying by OneCricket. 

“He plays golf right-handed, we see how dynamic he is with his switch-hitting and stuff, so he weighed up those options. He’s done it before, he practices batting in the nets,” he added.

Australia lost the second ODI against India by a huge margin along with the ODI series

Speaking of the game, Australia were unable to chase down a revised target of 317 runs in 33 overs as rain played spoilsport, thereby making things tougher for the visitors. It was quite evident that the Aussies felt the pressure of the run rate and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Among the pick of the bowlers, it was Mohammed Shami who rattled the Australia batting unit with his lethal bowling spell.

Hence, India having pocketed the game by 99 runs, the hosts managed to win the series and will hope for a clean sweep in the final ODI. The hosts will now clash with Australia in the final and third ODI of the series on Wednesday, September 27, in Rajkot.
