‘He said 'Man, these girls play so well'' - Jemimah Rodrigues recalls eavesdropping on fan's conversation during inaugural WPL
Jemimah Rodrigues represented Delhi Capitals in the inaugural WPL.
The inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 was an enormous success. With Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians grabbing the win over Meg Lanning-led Delhi Capitals in the summit clash, the tournament proved to be a huge step forward in women’s cricket.
Delhi Capitals batter Jemimah Rodrigues recently revealed an incident from when she was out on the streets of Mumbai to have an ice cream with American pacer Tara Norris. She talked about eavesdropping on a boy who was talking about the WPL.
"One more interesting story. I was taking one overseas player; I went in a hoodie and all that and standing in the line. So then one guy was like, "Hey, are you aware that WPL is going to start? I suddenly became curious; he had no clue that I am standing there in the line. He is like right here. So I wanted to hear what does he say. He says, ‘Kya solid khelte hai yaar ye ladki log’ (Man, these girls play so well)," Jemimah said on the latest episode of Breakfast with Champions.
"And I was like, what a moment, what a moment. It's honest; it's not like you meet people, they will sometimes just say it. I said no ice cream needed now; this is enough," she added.
Delhi Capitals lost WPL final against Mumbai Indians
Delhi Capitals put in a sensational performance in the inaugural season of the WPL. The team finished the group stages of the tournament in first place in the table with 12 points in eight games. Led by Meg Lanning, the side looked to go all the way when they took on Mumbai Indians in the final.
However, Jemimah had a subpar tournament as the 22-year-old only managed to score 126 runs in nine games. In the final, she was sent back to the pavilion for just nine runs as Delhi faced a heartbreaking defeat against Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians.
