'He will do get-togethers in the night, have a laugh, and get photos clicked' - Manoj Tiwary lambasts Glenn Maxwell's display in IPL 2024
It was a season to forget for the Australian all-rounder who was abysmally poor with the bat for RCB in the 17th edition of the IPL.
Following a stellar World Cup 2023 campaign and three exceptional IPL seasons from 2021 to 2023 for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Glenn Maxwell's dismal batting display in IPL 2024 has come as a shock to many for sure. Despite his reputation for explosive strokeplay and innovative shot-making, Glenn Maxwell's performance in the 17th edition of the IPL was a stark departure from expectations. He endured his worst season ever in the league, mustering just 52 runs across nine innings.
In the Eliminator against the Rajasthan Royals on May 22, Maxwell had an opportunity to make amends, but instead, he floundered, carelessly spooning a catch to long-on off the bowling of Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, to compound even further misery on his side. Interestingly, Maxwell had an outstanding track record against Ashwin in the IPL, having scored 140 runs off 69 deliveries and getting dismissed only twice before this encounter.
Former Indian cricketer, Manoj Tiwary, who boasts 98 IPL matches under his belt, unleashed a scathing critique of the Australian all-rounder during his appearance following the clash between RR and RCB. Stressing the precarious situation of the match after Cameron Green's dismissal with the score at 97/3 in 12.3 overs, Tiwary underscored that the primary requirement at that juncture was to stabilize the innings by occupying the crease for a few overs.
Highlighting Maxwell's extraordinary abilities while representing his nation, Tiwary expressed bewilderment at his contrasting performance in the IPL, suggesting that perhaps Maxwell lacked interest and doesn't value his wicket, prioritizing financial gains and socializing over his cricketing responsibilities.
“We have to come to Maxwell. It was a phase where a batter had to stay. You have so much of experience in international cricket - when you play for Australia, you perform so good. But as soon as you come to the IPL, I don't know what happens to him. It seems he has no interest. He doesn't care if he gets out, his bank balance is fine, the cheque will reach him, he will do get-togethers in the night, have a laugh, and get photos clicked,” remarked Tiwary, while speaking to Cricbuzz.
The end result is the trophy, which isn't there: Tiwary
Tiwary also ruminated on the hype which was created post RCB reviving their flagging campaign out of nowhere with six wins on the trot. Despite the team's satisfaction with their improved showings towards the end of the season, the absence of the trophy at the end of it didn't add up, which still remained a mystery yet to be decoded by the cognitive powerhouse of the franchise.
"What's the end result? You play to win. At the end of the day, they might be happy that they won six back-to-back matches to qualify, but the end result is the trophy, which isn't there. So, the problem is there,” added Tiwary.
