Avesh Khan recently shared his experiences of playing under Gautam Gambhir's mentorship during the latter's time at Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Gambhir was officially appointed as India's head coach last week after Rahul Dravid's tenure ended following the T20 World Cup 2024. The former India and Delhi cricketer is set to take charge from the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, where the Men in Blue are set to play three T20Is and as many ODIs against the Island Nation.

Gambhir worked as a mentor for LSG in the 2022 and 2023 seasons of the IPL and took the team to the playoffs on both occasions. Ahead of IPL 2024, he joined Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as their mentor and led the team to the title. However, he will be serving as a coach for the first time and fans are eagerly waiting to witness how he operates in the high-pressure job. Avesh, who worked closely with Gambhir during the latter's stint with LSG, said that the 42-year-old spoke less in the team meetings but made his points clear. The right-arm pacer also revealed that the Delhi-born always asks the players to give their 100 per cent for the team.

“Whatever I have learned from him, it is about the mindset that you should always look to get the better of your opponent and give your 100 per cent,” Avesh told BCCI, as quoted by Hindustan Times, ahead of India’s fourth T20I here on Saturday against Zimbabwe.

“In team meetings, as well as one-on-ones, he would speak less but would convey his point as to what is to be done. He would assign tasks and roles to players and he has always been a ‘team coach’. He always wants to win and everyone to give their 100 per cent,” he added.

The Sri Lanka tour begins on July 26, with the first T20I in Pallekele. The next two T20Is will be played at the same venue on July 27 and 29, respectively. The subsequent ODI matches will be held in Colombo on August 1, 4, and 7, respectively.
