'His career strike rate is 132' - Irfan Pathan unfolds Virat Kohli's adaptability to modern-day cricket
"I still believe that the most important point about these big players is their contribution in winning matches," Pathan said on his YouTube channel
Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan in his latest Seedhi Baat show talked about the improvement in Virat Kohli’s strike-rate from the earlier seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) opener kicked off his 2025 IPL campaign with a half-century against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 18th edition of the tournament.
Pathan, a premier left-arm pacer for the Men in Blue previously, highlighted evolution as a T20 batter on his YouTube channel. He pointed out that the right-hander initially played with a strike rate of around 120 in the earlier seasons of the IPL. However, over time, the opener adapted his game, batting more fluently and increasing his strike rate gradually. The 40-year-old cricketer-turned-commentator emphasized that the RCB star finished the 2024 season with a strike rate of 155, ultimately grabbing the Orange Cap as well.
The Baroda-born believes that legendary players like Virat Kohli will always strive to contribute to the team's success over personal accolades. The former left-arm bowler stated that Kohli’s presence in RCB’s line up will be crucial in the ongoing IPL season. The former cricketer also noted that Kohli’s overall IPL strike rate at 132, underscoring his efficiency in the short format of the game.
"What is Virat Kohli doing in modern-day cricket? When he started, he used to play with a strike rate of about 120. Then he started to bat slowly, he improved his strike rate. In the last season, he finished his strike rate at about 155. His career strike rate is 132. He finished his strike rate better than that, he is trying to improve himself," Pathan said on his YouTube channel.
But I still believe that the most important point about these big players is their contribution in match winning matches. I feel that Virat Kohli always plays regularly. So this year also, I hope that the fans of RCB will come and win matches. The strike rate will continue to improve," the 40-year-old concluded.
