With the Indian team facing a challenging period with key players struggling with form and chatters of unrest within the dressing room, head coach Gautam Gambhir revelation has brought a sense of optimism. Speaking ahead of the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney, Gambhir expressed his confidence in the team’s ability to secure a victory and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

India’s performance in the ongoing series has been inconsistent, with the team trailing 2-1 against a strong Australian side. The form of senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli has come under question, with Sharma managing just 31 runs from five innings and Kohli struggling to make a significant impact.

Questions surrounding their future in the team have led to speculation about a potential transition phase. Addressing the media, Gambhir emphasized the importance of having honest individuals in the dressing for the betterment of Indian cricket.

"Certainly, one thing I think, Indian cricket will always, always be in safe hands, till the time you got honest people sitting in there. And honestly, that is the most important thing for any transition. And it is not about phasing out senior players or getting in the youngsters," he said at the press conference on Thursday, January 02.

We know we’ve got the skill set: Gambhir

The team has also faced difficulties in finding the right combination in this series. Reports also pointed to communication gaps between Gambhir and senior players. However, the coach's focus is on the bigger picture. He quashed the notion that the solution lies solely in phasing out senior players or fast-tracking youngsters. Instead, Gambhir stressed the need for patience and nurturing talent.

"Ultimately, the only thing that can keep you and that perform starts from all of us, not only from the players but from the coaches as well. And I said that Indian cricket, the kind of talent there is in Indian cricket. I think we were always been the safest. Yes, there will be time to get the results where we will have to be patient. And more importantly, I think rather than only pressing on the young players, I think we have to give them time to develop. They will end up becoming world-class players and that is what is important," he added.

Despite being behind in the series, Gambhir is extremely confident about India’s chances in the Sydney Test. The former opener also stated that the team has all the skill sets to win a Test match.
