Pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami are two of India’s ace fast bowlers, who have performed consistently across all three formats. While their contributions have been key to India’s success, the duo has had a brilliant partnership whenever they have shared the field. Interestingly, the two have played 59 international matches together since 2016.

Both players have been affected by injuries at different times, leading to limited appearances together. Their combined presence in ICC events has often been a rarity, due to injuries and tactical decisions. Bumrah and Shami have played in six ICC events together. They are: T20 World Cup 2016, Champions Trophy 2017, ODI World Cup 2019, World Test Championship Final 2021, T20 World Cup 2021 and ODI World Cup 2023.

In the 2016 World T20 and the 2017 Champions Trophy, did not feature in any games despite being part of the squad. Similarly, in the 2019 ODI World Cup, Shami played only four matches, coming in for the injured Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Since 2022, their availability for ICC tournaments has been further limited. Bumrah missed the 2022 T20 World Cup and the 2023 World Test Championship final, while Shami was sidelined for the 2024 T20 World Cup due to an ankle injury. Their most recent ICC appearance together was in the 2023 ODI World Cup, which was held in India.

The duo in the 59 matches played together, have picked 325 wickets and India have managed to win 31 of those. Meanwhile, Shami made a comeback to the India squad with his inclusion in the five T20Is against England starting on January 22. The ace pacer returns after last playing for the national side in the ODI World Cup final in November 2023, after which he had ankle surgery and also suffered from knee-related niggles.

On the other hand, Bumrah had a wonderful Test series against Australia, finishing with 32 wickets across five Test matches and earning the Player of the Series award. While Bumrah has been rested for the T20Is against the Three Lions, the duo are likely to be seen heading India's pace department in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled to be played in Pakistan and UAE.
