Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has returned to his old Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians (MI) after being traded from Gujarat Titans (GT) through an all-cash trade. The five-time champions paid INR 15 crore to acquire his services along with an undisclosed transfer fee.

With this trade, life has come full circle for the Gujarat-born cricketer who was first spotted by MI’s talent development wing and was bought for his base price of INR 10 Lakh in the 2015 auction. From there onwards, there was no looking back for Pandya who rose through the ranks during the golden period for MI and played a pivotal role in their four title victories in a span of six years.

After failing to leave his mark in the first two seasons, Pandya finally came into the limelight in 2017 with his numerous crucial knocks as he scored 250 runs in the season at an average of 35.71 and a strike rate of 156.25. He also managed to scalp 6 wickets in the season which led to MI retaining him for a massive INR 11 crore ahead of the 2018 mega auction.

Pandya had his breakthrough seasons in 2018 and 2019 where scored 260 and 402 runs respectively. He also bagged 32 wickets in two seasons thereby fulfilling his role as a complete all-rounder.

After being retained for three seasons, Pandya was released by MI ahead of the 2021 edition but was bought once again by the franchise for INR 11 Crore. However, the all-rounder couldn't do justice to the amount in the season, where he scored just 127 runs from 12 matches. Hence, he was once again released by MI ahead of the mega auction in 2022 which changed the fortunes of the star all-rounder.

The then 28-year-old was onboarded by the newly-formed IPL franchise Gujarat Titans as their captain for INR 15 Crore where he tasted massive success. Pandya led Gujarat to an IPL triumph in their debut season with his stellar performance where he scored 487 runs from 15 matches (highest for his team). The seamer also scalped eight wickets at an average of 27.75 and an economy of 7.28 and became the second captain to lift the trophy in the debut season in the history of IPL.

After leading GT to back-to-back IPL finals, Pandya has returned to Mumbai where he will be expected to take Rohit Sharma’s legacy forward.
