Former Australia men’s head coach and opener, Justin Langer has been named the new head coach of London Spirit. The 54-year-old will succeed Trevor Bayliss in the role after consecutive disappointing seasons in The Hundred competition.
The former Australian opener played 105 Tests between 1993 and 2007, scoring over 7,500 runs. Following his playing career, Langer went forward with the coaching duties, leading Australia to remarkable successes, including a drawn Ashes series in 2019, an ICC T20 World Cup victory in 2021, and a 4-0 Ashes win on home soil the same year.
He has previously guided Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash and is currently head coach of Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League. The former left-hander represented Middlesex as an overseas player from 1998 to 2000 and became an Honorary Life Member of the MCC in 2015.
London Spirit’s performance in the past two seasons has been disappointing. Under Bayliss, the team secured only three wins across two seasons, finishing seventh in 2023 and last in 2024. Meanwhile, the Spirit’s women’s team, led by Heather Knight and Ashley Noffke, clinched their maiden title in 2024.
"I'm thrilled to be appointed to this role with London Spirit, and I'm excited to experience The Hundred. I'm looking forward to being a part of the tournament later this year, and working with such a talented group of players and coaches," Langer said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
