Deepti Sharma, the versatile all-rounder of the Indian women's cricket team, has actualized a childhood dream by donning the hat of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in the Uttar Pradesh Police. Originating from Agra, 26-year-old Sharma's recent appointment as DSP stands as a testament to her exceptional journey, filled with resilience and resolve.
Her contributions to the team's triumphs, notably the Asian Games gold and the Commonwealth Games silver in 2022, garnered accolades from far and wide. Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, honoured Sharma with a generous cash prize of INR 3 crore and a post as DSP for her stellar performances. This milestone not only highlighted Sharma's multifaceted talents, but also served as an inspiration for aspiring athletes across the nation.
"I always dreamt of becoming a police officer. I used to see that it is a difficult job but I always wanted to wear that uniform once and wanted to see how it felt. My parents also supported me that I should become a police officer. My family and I are really happy with this recognition," said Sharma as quoted by Deccan Herald.
In the BCCI's annual awards, she was named the women's international cricketer of the year for the 2022-23 season, in light of her exceptional performance. During this period, the 26-year-old claimed 38 wickets and contributed 313 runs with the bat in T20 cricket, which included two half-centuries. The accolade added to her outstanding contributions to the team's success and her prowess in both the bowling and batting departments.
"My focus will be to contribute for the team": Sharma
The off-spinner is primed for the upcoming Women's Premier League set to kick off in Bengaluru on Friday, February 23. Expressing her anticipation, Sharma aims to synchronize her performance with fellow spinner Sophie Ecclestone as they represent UP Warriorz. Their inaugural clash against Royal Challengers awaits on Saturday, February 24. The southpaw voiced her preference for a higher batting order slot, gearing up for an impactful display.
"The more balls I face, the more time I will get to score big. But whether I bat above or below, my focus will be to contribute for the team," she added.
