‘I am a great believer in first instincts’ - Zubin Bharucha reminisces over Yashasvi Jaiswal’s early days

Yashasvi Jaiswal is being hailed as the next big thing in Indian cricket. After his sensational performance for Rajasthan Royals in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, the 21-year-old earned his maiden national team call-up for the ongoing series against the West Indies.

Jaiswal made his name known right on his debut as he completed a sensational century in the first Test of the series. However, the latest rising star of Indian cricket had a beginning full of perseverance. Former Mumbai batter and Rajasthan Royals’ High Performance Director, Zubin Bharucha, recently, revealed how Jaiswal used to train in his early days. 

Bharucha talked of several aspects of the 21-year-old’s training regime in his early days, which included working with a baseball coach to help his power game and even getting blisters on his hands due to the excessive training. 

"He had come from U-19 India but IPL is a very different level. He came for the trial and I don't remember who the bowler was but he walked across stumps and played a flick behind the square, first ball," Bharucha was quoted as saying by Ommanorama.

"I am a great believer in first instincts. I didn't want to see more of him because I had seen that arrogance and unimaginable confidence level you want to see in a batter," he added.

Furthermore, Bharucha also talked about Yashasvi Jaiswal’s transformation from an 18-year-old player to becoming a new star of Indian cricket. It would not be a long shot to say that he has played a big part in the 21-year-old's transformation into the next big thing in Indian cricket and realized his potential.

"There is a saying that it takes a village to make a champion. There are many people who have contributed in Yashasvi's journey so far and I just happen to be one of them. He came from a place where he had very little," Bharucha said.

"He certainly knows where he comes from. He's very clear that he has risen from nothing and he is conscious of what he is doing now and where he feels he is going," he added.
