Lucknow Super Giants’ skipper KL Rahul, during the recent IPL 2023 game against the Rajasthan Royals, hurt himself after being hit by a throw from one of his team’s fielders. The incident took place in the second innings when LSG were defending the target of 155 runs that they had put up against the hosts on Wednesday, April 19, at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
Lucknow were successful in defending their total as they defeated Rajasthan by 10 runs. KL Rahul scored a 32-ball 39 while opening the batting alongside Kyle Mayers, before being dismissed in the 11th over. While speaking to the presenters after winning the match, during the post-match presentation, Rahul, on being asked about getting hurt, funnily remarked that he had been doing something wrong.
“I got hit by one of the throws from my own teammates. I am doing something wrong as a captain clearly,” Rahul cheekily said while answering Sanjay Manjrekar’s question about his injury.
We realised this isn't a 180 wicket: Rahul
Later, he spoke about his team’s performance in the game, and said that the batters did a good job by putting up a 155-run target on a track that wasn’t suitable to bat upon. Rahul and Mayers started off decently, putting up an 82-run opening stand, but LSG suffered a mini-collapse as they lost four batters in a span of four overs.
“In the 10 over mark, the message me and Kyle (Mayers) sent out was 160 would be a good total on this track, they have some good bowlers as well who exploited the conditions. We fell 10 short but made up with the ball. And there was no dew so made it fair for both teams,” Rahul said.
Rahul also revealed that the batters thought that a score around 180 could be a winning total on the Jaipur surface, but things changes after he and Mayers faced Trent Boult in the first over of the game. He revealed that the duo had a chat in the middle about how the wicket had been acting, and devised their strategies accordingly moving forward.
“We came in here yesterday (Tuesday) and saw 180 would be a par score, but the first over from (Trent) Boult, me and Kyle had a chat and realised this isn't a 180 wicket. The ball was keeping a bit low, so we gave ourselves time in the powerplay. Maybe if we played a bit better, we might have got 170 as well,” Rahul added.
