Dewald Brevis is one name that has created plenty of buzz in world cricket let alone in South African cricketing circles by virtue of his performances in age group cricket and several T20 leagues. Being just 20 years old, Brevis has shown massive potential in domestic cricket and has impressed with his performances consistently. However, Proteas’ Test skipper Temba Bavuma is of the opinion that it is not going to be easy for Brevis to make his way into South Africa’s ongoing set-up.
Yet to make his debut for the national team, Brevis could prove to be one of the best players for the side in the future. However, Bavuma opined that he has no objection to Brevis being introduced to the national team so that he can understand South Africa’s culture better.
''I wouldn’t be against a situation where he comes within the group to understand what the team is about. I would love for that to happen and I have been pushing. But for him to walk straight into the starting 11, that case needs to get a bit stronger. If I look at the teams, especially in red ball, it is strong sides that have been put on display," Temba Bavuma was quoted as saying by Times Live.
I am not even making the T20 side: Bavuma
Despite being impressed by Brevis’ performances in domestic cricket, Bavuma still does not seem convinced that the 20-year-old currently has what it takes to make his international debut yet. Citing his own example, the skipper opined that even he is not good enough to make it to the T20I side of South Africa.
"I am not even making the T20 side, guys who are playing have made it a strong side. You ask the question, of where is a talented guy like Dewald going to fit in. If I look at the white ball side as well, that top five or six is strong at the moment," Bavuma said.
"I can understand the hype and noise around the guy, he plays a super attractive game, and he really goes out and displays his talent. I feel for him a little bit as a young guy with all these expectations and noise around him, and I hope he has the mental capacity to be able to park that aside and focus on enjoying the game," he added.
