Chasing 136 runs against Gujarat Titans in Match 30 of the ongoing Indian Premier League 2023, Lucknow were in full control of the match until the last few overs of the game. However, to their horror, the team failed to chase it down following which, LSG skipper KL Rahul was put on the spot for his ill-timed innings of 68 runs off 61 deliveries. Notably, Rahul was still on the crease when LSG required 12 to win in the final over, but unfortunately, the home team lost four wickets back-to-back as they eventually suffered a seven-run defeat.
Meanwhile, in the post-match presentation, Rahul said that he couldn’t pinpoint the area where they went wrong against the defending champions. He was visibly stunned and stated that things happened so quickly that he couldn’t decipher much. Nevertheless, the 31-year-old lauded his bowlers for doing a commendable job and also mentioned that such things happen in the game of cricket.
“I don't know how it happened, but it has happened. I can't put a finger on where it went wrong, but we lost 2 points today, this is cricket. I thought we were brilliant with the ball, 135 was 10 runs under par, the bowling was exceptional, we started well with the bat, but these things happen, we'll have to take it on the chin. But still a long way to go, 8 points off 7 games, we were on the wrong side of the result today,” Rahul was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
“We were well ahead in the game and I wasn't really trying to bat deep, I still wanted to play my shots, take on the bowlers, but they bowled well in that 2-3 over period, by Noor and Jayant, we perhaps should have taken a few more chances with wickets in hand, they bowled decently, but I think we missed out on some boundary opportunities, the pressure got to us in the last 3-4 overs, we played well until then. They did bowl well though,” he further added.
'Brainless from Lko' - Venkatesh Prasad slams LSG for giving away match against GT
Notably, former India cricketer Venkatesh Prasad expressed his disappointment with Lucknow’s run chase and questioned Rahul’s role. He stated that LSG's innings was 'brainless' and also mentioned that the home team bottled their chase.
“Bottling a run chase when 30 needed of 35 balls with 9 wickets in hand requires some baffling batting. Happened with Punjab in 2020 on few ocassions losing games they should have won easily. As brilliant as Guj were with ball & Hardik smart with his captaincy, brainless from Lko,” Prasad wrote on his Twitter handle.
