KL Rahul is currently the most talked-about cricketer in the Indian team. Despite Team India’s win in the two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the Indian opener’s place is largely questioned. Rahul was poor with the bat in the two Tests, which India won comfortably. Notably, he now lost the vice-captaincy for the remaining two Tests and is likely to miss his place in the playing XI.
Regarding Rahul’s performances, a lot of opinions are coming even from former cricketers too. Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra believes that the chances given to Rahul have now reached the limit. He also opened up about his dissatisfaction with coach Rahul Dravid and skipper Rohit Sharma in backing Rahul.
Chopra indulged in a Twitter debate with former Indian pacer Venkatesh Prasad over Rahul's position in the Test team. He shared the screenshots of Rahul’s average of 38.64, which is the third best among all Indian batters. Rohit and Washington Sundar (only 1 Test) are in the first and second position respectively in SENA countries since 2020.
"Indian batters in SENA countries. Maybe, this is the reason selectors/coach/captain are backing KLR. He’s played 2 Tests at home (ongoing BGT) during this period,” Chopra wrote on Twitter.
The former opener also highlighted that he doesn't want a BCCI role as a selector or coach or an IPL team mentor job.
"No, I don’t need a BCCI role as a selector/coach. I don’t need any mentor, or coaching role at any IPL team either," he added.
Indian head coach Rahul Dravid and skipper Rohit Sharma back KL Rahul
KL Rahul averages 33.44 after 47 Tests as Dravid and Sharma showed complete faith in him. The head coach mentioned the right-hander's hundreds in South Africa and England. Rohit Sharma, on the other hand, talked more about the potential of the player rather than the scores.
India have gained an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the four-match series against Australia. Winning the second Test in Delhi, meant that India have retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The last two Tests will be played in Indore and Ahmedabad, respectively. However, fans are eager to see who will partner the Indian skipper in the third Test which will commence from March 1.
