I don't see Rohit Sharma playing in the next T20 World Cup: Wasim Jaffer

India's trophy drought in ICC tournaments was prolonged after a humiliating defeat to Jos Buttler's England in the semi-final ended their 2022 T20 World Cup campaign in Adelaide. The defeat has raised a few question marks over the selection of some of the senior Indian players with Rohit Sharma's place in the T20I setup also in jeopardy. Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer does not see the Indian skipper representing the Men in Blue at the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Rohit Sharma's underwhelming tournament in Australia has not only put question marks on his leadership qualities but has also thrown his place in the side in jeopardy. The flamboyant opener managed just one half-century in the tournament and looked sluggish throughout India's campaign.

His opening partnership with KL Rahul was the bane for the Indian team as they struggled to score freely at the top of the innings, putting pressure on the middle-order batters. When asked about the omission of certain senior players for the next edition of the T20 World Cup, former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer reckoned that Rohit Sharma is unlikely to make the 2024 squad after his dismal showing this time around.

"Well, I think Rohit Sharma is that name for me. I don't see him playing in the next World Cup, T20 World Cup especially. Having too many names on the pool sometimes confuses you and that is exactly what happened to the Indian team in the tournament," said Jaffer on 'BatBricks7 presents Run Ki Runneeti' on CricTracker.

With the next installment of the T20 World Cup still two years away, India will need to look at some fresh faces as they have several current Indian players who are well in their 30s and are unlikely to make the squad next time around. The impending 50-over World Cup in 2023 in India will also test the resolve of some of the players who might bid farewell to the shortest format of the game to focus on next year's tournament in the subcontinent.
