Former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has opened up on Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) current approach, mentioning that the franchise is not dependent on MS Dhoni’s batting contributions. Speaking after CSK’s 50-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2025, Manjrekar opened up about how the team seems to have chosen to use Dhoni more for his leadership abilities, wicketkeeping duties, and brand value rather than as a batter.

CSK’s decision to send Dhoni at No. 9 during their chase of 197 against RCB on March 28 triggered immense criticism. With the scorecard reading 80 for 6 in the 13th over, and the required run rate increasing, the five-time champions opted to send R Ashwin instead of their former skipper. Ashwin’s 8-ball 11 did little to stabilize the innings, and by the time Dhoni arrived at the crease, the chase was virtually out of reach.

Despite walking in so late, Dhoni smashed 30 runs off 16 balls, including two sixes and a boundary in the final over. After the match, many fans and experts questioned why he did not promote himself up the order. Manjrekar, while analyzing CSK, spoke that the team is built around other batters rather than relying on Dhoni’s scoring ability.

"I continue to maintain my stance this season that Dhoni’s presence in the team is more for brand value than actual cricketing value. That is the decision CSK has taken—he brings in the crowd and has an enormous following. If Dhoni chooses to bat at No. 8, he will still contribute some runs. Even at No. 9, 10, or 11, he has the ability. However, I don’t think CSK is relying on Dhoni’s batting contributions; they are expecting the other players to do the job. That said, his wicket-keeping remains top-notch,” he told on JioStar.

The veteran's glove work has been at his usual best, as seen in his sharp stumpings and efficiency behind the stumps. Meanwhile, CSK seems to have structured their team around younger players and finishers like Shivam Dube. The debate over Dhoni’s batting position will remain, but as long as he continues to contribute in other ways, his place in the squad is unlikely to be questioned by the franchise.
