Ahead of the clash between Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals, the past three days featured five out the six participating teams scoring well in excess of 200. With a sudden influx of overpowering batting becoming typical, Match 32 of IPL 2024 played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad was anticipated to conform to the same pattern. However, upon being invited to bat first by the visitors, GT toppled like a row of dominos, being bowled out for 89 in 17.3 overs, an innings which comprised a total of 12 extras conceded by DC.

None of the top-order and middle-order batters could get going. The innings saw only three players getting into double figures. Notably, Shahrukh Khan, the Impact Player, copped a golden duck. However, it was bowling all-rounder Rashid Khan's 31 (24) which saved GT the blushes.

Speaking in the post-match presentation, Gill didn't hold back and called a spade a spade, diverting the blame to a poor display by him and his team's batters, although remarking that it was imperative for the group to move on and take things in their stride, regardless of the result of the match. He further emphasized that the pitch had no demons in store for batters, with his, Wriddhiman Saha, and Sudharsan's dismissals serving as a crystal clear evidence of the same. Gill added that the collapse went through more because of faulty shot selection more than anything else.

"Our batting performance was very average, but I guess we need to move on. Even if we had a good game, it's important for us to move on from this match and maintain the same mindset for the next one. We need to come back and try again. I think the wicket was all right, to be honest. If you look at our dismissals, the way I got out and even the way Wriddhi bhai got out had nothing to do with the pitch. Sai got run-out. So I don't think there was anything wrong with the pitch. It was simply a case of bad batting performance and poor shot selection I would say," a frustrated Shubman Gill said.

GT set unwanted record in their three-year IPL tenure

Ever since their foray into the IPL in the 2022 season, GT have never scored below the threshold of the 100-run mark, with their previous lowest score coming against the same opposition they played against in Match 32 of IPL 2024. However, the recently-concluded match against DC saw them posting their lowest-ever score in the IPL, simultaneously making it the lowest-ever score to which DC have been able to restrict the opposition in the history of the 17-year-long tournament.
