'I eat my words' - Aakash Chopra takes back 'Gill not a fantastic story' comment after T20I century
Shubman Gill has taken international cricket by storm by flourishing in each and every format
Former India cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra accepted his folly in completely misinterpreting young India cricketer Shubman Gill to be limited to only being a player of the longer formats of cricket.
Shubman Gill has been in blazing hot form as he has continued his midas touch in almost every match, every series and every format of cricket that he has been playing, ever since he made his international debut for India. Gill struck an oustanding 126* off 63 deliveries in the third T20I to guide team India to their biggest victories, by margin of runs, in the history of T20I cricket.
"The first question in your mind might be whether Shubman Gill has become a T20 cricketer now. I will keep my hands on my heart and say the truth - I felt he plays Tests very well, ODI is his favorite format but I wasn't 100 percent certain about T20s," the 45-year-old said in a video on his YouTube channel.
He has made such a big score now, it is fantastic: Chopra
The former India batter claimed that he had been daring enough to comment on the 23-year-old's role for the Indian team, stating that he felt Gill would be fit to play only Tests and ODIs for India. Chopra used to believe that Gill still needed to be trained for the competitiveness of T20Is as he was too young and raw.
But Chopra admitted that he made a mistake and misread Gill's capabilities, and lauded the youngster for his outstanding outing with the bat against New Zealand. He further mentioned, that India's victory against New Zealand in the third T20I was more of a New Zealand versus Shubman Gill contest, labelling it as a one-man show.
"I admit it, I say in front of everyone, there is nothing wrong. He has made such a big score now, it is fantastic. I eat my words, they are very, very bitter. It is the truth that it is the highest T20I score by an Indian. If we talk about the gap between his individual score and the opposition team's score, that's also the second highest. The Afghanistan guys were in front of Virat Kohli in the Asia Cup and now it is about here," Chopra concluded.
