'I hope these muscles are big enough' - Kraigg Brathwaite's befitting reply to Rodney Hogg after Gabba win

West Indies registered a historic win over Australia in the second Test of the two-match series as they beat the hosts by eight runs on Day 4 at The Gabba, Brisbane. Australia came into the day needing 156 runs to win having eight wickets in hand but were blown away by Shamar Joseph who registered incredible figures of 7/68. Courtesy of their win, the Windies won their first Test in Australia after a long gap of 27 years and it was also Australia’s first ever loss in a day-night Test.

Following the historic victory, West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite revealed what inspired his men to script a dramatic comeback in the series. The 31-year-old stated that the harsh criticism from former Australia fast bowler Rodney Hogg after their ten-wicket loss in the first game became the driving force for them to win the second Test. Notably, Hogg had called their team hopeless and pathetic and compared them with the West Indies of the old.

“I must say we had two words that inspired us in this Test match, Mr. Rodney Hogg said that we were pathetic and hopeless. That was our inspiration. We wanted to show the world we're not pathetic. And I must ask him, are these muscles big enough for him,” said Brathwaite in the post-match presentation.

“Let’s not beat around the bush: They were hopeless (in Adelaide). We should have two divisions now. We can’t have these weak sides coming out here. Mitchell Starc with a brand new pink ball, he’s going to run straight through them (at the Gabba). So I wouldn’t think the game would go any further than three days. They’re pathetic,” Hogg had told 10 News.

“I look back at the West Indies of old and we’re down stretching on the ground and they’re running past in Speedos and I’m going ‘gee look at their muscles’. These days the West Indies, they’d be running past in overcoats,” he added.

Shamar Joseph was adjudged Player of the Series

Coming back to the game, West Indies showed great character throughout the Test as after opting to bat first, they were left reeling at 64/5 on Day 1. However, Kavem Hodge (71) and Joshua Da Silva (79) rescued their team with a 149-run stand and helped them reach 311 in the first innings.

Later on, Alzarri Joseph (4/84) and Kemar Roach (3/47) reduced Australia to 54/5 in their first innings before Usman Khawaja (75), Alex Carey (65) and Pat Cummins (64*) bailed them out of trouble to reach 289/9d. Meanwhile, Shamar Joseph was awarded both Player of the Match and Player of the Series for picking 13 wickets and scoring 57 runs in his debut Test series.
