The 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is looming on the horizon, and with the 10 teams all set with their retentions and releases and the auction around the corner, the fans could be in for yet another brilliant season of cricket in arguably the biggest franchise cricket league in the world.
Ahead of the season, two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders also announced their retention, showing incredible faith in their veteran stars. The franchise announced that they will be retaining all-rounder Andre Russell ahead of the IPL 2024.
With the 35-year-old all set to take center stage for Kolkata once more, he came forward to talk about how grateful he is after the franchise continued to show faith in him. He also stated that he wants to have a mega-season in 2024, which could spell trouble for his opponents.
"There has been a lot of talk about me getting released and all that. But the most important thing is that the franchise believes in me. They know what I can do and what I have done in the past. I really want to make sure to have a mega season next year," Russell said in an interaction with Hindustan Times.
Once I'm selected, I'll be ready to go: Russell
Furthermore, Russell also talked of a potential comeback for the West Indies side for the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2024. Russell stated that there have been some conversations between him and head coach Darren Sammy, and there is a real possibility that he will play for the national team in the tournament.
"Once I'm selected, I'll be ready to go. There have been some conversations going on between me and the coach (Daren Sammy), so if he stays true to his words, I'll be ready to play,” Russell said.
The West Indies will be keen on putting in a good performance in the T20 World Cup as co-hosts, and it could be interesting to see how the two-time champions fare.
