Australia made their much-anticipated comeback in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as they won the third Test against India by nine wickets. India’s batting line-up collapsed in the first innings of the game as they were bundled out after scoring a mere 109 runs.

The Aussies made a strong case for themselves as they notched up 197 runs in the first innings. India did make a small comeback into the game, thanks to an influential knock by Cheteshwar Pujara, where the veteran batter scored 59 runs and gave Australia a target of 76 runs to chase, which they were able to do quite easily.

Seeing India’s subpar performance in the third Test, former Australian cricketer Mark Waugh came forward to give his take on the match. Waugh also opined that the batters threw their wickets and that India’s complacency was a major factor in them losing the game.

"I think India took their foot off the pedal. I think they became complacent. Once they won the toss, they thought it would just happen for them. They did not get their right balance between attack and defense. Few of their batters threw their wickets away by over-attacking shots," Waugh told Fox Cricket.

"With the ball, in the first innings, they were where near accurate as they can be. They bowled a lot of half-volleys. I think India have a lot of thinking to do now. They got to bounce back because they were way below their best in the game," he added.

India need to win one more game for guaranteed WTC final spot

India’s plan for a guaranteed spot in the World Test Championship final was disrupted by Australia as the hosts lost the third Test. India still need to win one more match to guarantee their spot in the final of the WTC.

It will be all to play for the hosts as they take on Australia in the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Ahmedabad at the Narendra Modi Stadium on March 9.
