Former Australia cricketer Time Paine feels that England will not bench keeper-batter Jonny Bairstow in the second Ashes Test at Lord's beginning from June 28 despite his struggles behind the stumps. Notably, England suffered a two-wicket defeat against the visitors in the opening Test, at Edgbaston, in Birmingham.

Bairstow scored 78 runs in England's opening innings of the first Test, but missed several stumpings and catches. In the second innings, he struggled with the bat and could only manage to score 20 runs.

When asked whether England would reconsider using Bairstow as the keeper-batter in the second Test. To this, Paine responded by saying that England have created an environment in which they support their team and provide some security over time. He also believes that coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes will not exclude Bairstow after one terrible Test match.

"I think they have set an environment where they back their team in and they give them some security over time. I don't think Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes are the type of people that will throw a Jonny Bairstow out after one bad Test match," Pain said on the 'Whateley' of the SEN podcast.

I think England will back Bairstow: Paine

The former Australian Test skipper went on to say that England will back him as they know how dangerous he is. The 38-year-old also emphasised the keeper-batter's destructive abilities with the bat and the fact that he had only recently returned from a long injury break.

"Obviously, he didn't keep well. I think they will back him in. They know how dangerous he is with the bat as well and that's the style of cricket that they want to play. He has also come off a pretty horrific injury and had a long spell out of the game. So they expect him to get better," Paine concluded.
