In a stunning debut for the Mumbai Indians in the Women's Premier League 2024, Sajeevan Sajana emerged as the shining star, propelling her team to victory with a last-ball six against formidable opponents. Her remarkable performance not only ignited the defending champions' campaign but also thrust her into the spotlight. Sajana, a right-handed batter, announced her arrival on the big stage with a match-winning six off spinner Alice Capsey, reminiscent of Kieron Pollard's explosive style.
Yet, Sajana's journey to cricketing stardom began modestly, armed only with a coconut branch, symbolising her humble origins. In a recent interview, she reflected on her family's unwavering support, which paved the way for her ascent to the grand stage of Mumbai cricket. Teammate Yastika Bhatia hailed her as the 'Kieron Pollard' of the MI women's team, acknowledging her game-changing abilities.
“I was five-years-old when I started playing cricket. But I did not know much about women’s cricket. It was Elsamma teacher who introduced me to the game. At that time, I did not have a proper cricket bat, so I used to play with a coconut branch and all. However, when I was selected to play for Kerala, I got a professional kitbag. Our family background was a little weak, so when I played matches, I got DA, TA and match fee. This helped our family a little bit financially,” Sajana said while speaking to JioCinema.
My dream is to play for India: Sajana
In a pivotal moment for her cricketing career, Sajana clinched her breakthrough when the Mumbai Indians secured her for INR 15 lakh at the auctions in December 2023. The Kerala batter's signing with MI Women marked a triumphant milestone for her parents, who witnessed their daughter's ascent to the pinnacle of cricketing opportunities. However, this milestone merely initiates Sajana's journey, as she harbours aspirations beyond donning the Mumbai blue; her sights are set on representing the prestigious Blues of India.
“Last year I didn’t get selected for WPL, so I was very disappointed. I performed well and got selected by Mumbai Indians this year and was very happy and excited. I was very excited to spend time in the MI camp and share the dressing room with legends. My dream is to play for India and the WPL platform might help me get there,” she concluded.
