'I was close' - Australian leggie Adam Zampa disappointed at his omission from India tour
Australia have included Nathan Lyon, Ashton Agar, Mitchell Swepson and uncapped Todd Murphy for the Test tour of India.
Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa has expressed his disappointment on not being picked in the squad for the upcoming four-match Test series in India starting February 9. While the 30-year-old has been a regular member in the Australia's white-ball setup in the last few years, he has not succeeded in making a mark in the longest format yet.
At the same time, a gutted Zampa has also said that he was reportedly given an assurance by head coach Andrew McDonald that he is well in the reckoning to find a place in the 18-member squad for the India tour which was not to be. Apparently, even the chief selector George Bailey was involved in the conversation that happened around six weeks ago.
I’m very disappointed: Adam Zampa
“I was close. I got told from George Bailey and Andrew McDonald that it was one of the toughest (decisions) they had to make for the tour. I’m very disappointed, I would have loved to be on it,” Zampa said as quoted by news.com.au. "
“That was the messaging I got six weeks ago, this could be a very good chance, I could be on it. Now I’m not I’m very flat about it,” the leggie further added.
Meanwhile, Adam Zampa ensured that he was well prepared for this golden opportunity by participating in the Sheffield Shield cricket tournament where he went on to bag three scalps for New South Wales against Victoria at the SCG last month.
However, when Cricket Australia (CA) announced their 18-member squad for the Test tour of India, there was no sign of the leg-spinner as the Aussies named four frontline spinners- Nathan Lyon, Ashton Agar, Mitchell Swepson and the uncapped offie Todd Murphy.
Zampa is currently leading the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League (BBL) 12. The Stars have had a dismal campaign so far and are languishing at the seventh position in the eight-team points table with just three wins from 10 matches with six points to their tally at an NRR of -0.296.
