On his Test debut, England spinner Tom Hartley leaked 131 runs in just 25 overs in the first innings of the opening Test against India in Hyderabad. He was immediately subjected to trolls but the 24-year-old has made slight adjustments to his bowling and picked up seven wickets in the second innings to script a famous win for the visitors.
It started with Jaiswal bashing him for a four on his first delivery in Test cricket. Recalling that, the cricketer mentioned that he was fine with that, as it is not the first time when a batter will come hard at him. Moreover, hartley pointed out that he rather prefers to see how his delivery was and the risk-taking factor by the batter than getting bogged down by their attacking approach.
“He's not the first, and he won't be the last! As a spinner, people are going to come after you. I'm fine with it if people want to come after me. I sort of have to go into a different mindset. You look back at the ball and you think it wasn't a bad ball. If that's the way they want to play, you've just got to play with it,” Hartley was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
Hartley’s seven-fer in the second innings has also given him a lot of confidence for the remaining four matches against India. He is expecting a bigger role from the team management and stated to be ready for what lies ahead.
“Coming out here, I was just looking to get a game or a couple of games. I might have a big role, but I'm more than ready for that. I want more of it,” the Lancshire-born cricketer said.
Hartley reveals the reason behind success in the second innings
Tom Hartley pointed out that he slightly changed his action to find success in the second innings of the match. The cricketer revealed that he was running in quickly in the first innings but in the second innings, he decided to slow things down and it has given him success against the Indian batters.
“When you're playing for the first time you just run up that bit quick. And you think, well, just slow things down, let your action do the work. When I run in quick, I just tend to lose my action a bit. I just slowed it down and kept it simple, and it seemed to work,” Hartley said.
