India's Jasprit Bumrah has been named as the ICC Cricketer Of The Year 2024 at the ICC Awards. The prestigious award is named after the former West Indies great, Sir Garfield Sobers. With this, he became the fifth Indian cricketer to win the accolade, joining the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Rahul Dravid, and Ravichandran Ashwin on January 28.

The ace pace bowler overcame Joe Root, Travis Head, and  Harry Brook to win the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, awarded by the International Cricket Council. In the 13 Tests and eight T20Is which Bumrah played for India, he secured 71 and 15 wickets, respectively.

Quite commendably, 13 of Bumrah's Tests were played in away conditions. As far as the longest format is concerned, he delivered stellar performances in the series against England and Australia (excluding the final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground). For his superb showing with the ball in the T20 World Cup 2024 in West Indies and the United States of America, he was awarded the Player of the Tournament recognition.

Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, and Ravichandran Ashwin won the ICC Cricketer Of The Year in 2004, 2010, and 2016, respectively. Virat Kohli won the award in successive years (2017 and 2018).

Notably, Jasprit Bumrah is currently recovering from a back injury that he sustained during the 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. It is being speculated that the pacer would be back for the third ODI of the series against England to test where he stands in terms of his fitness levels. He understandably is a crucial component for India as far as the upcoming edition of the Champions Trophy is concerned.
