The International Cricket Council (ICC) made a massive error while updating the Test rankings, as they put team India ahead of Australia on the points table. The glitch on the website put Rohit Sharma-led side on the No.1 spot instead of the Aussies who are the team actually leading in terms of the points.
Australia who were to have 126 rating points, were instead given 111 points whereas the Indian side was given rating points of 115. This error momentarily put the Asian giants on the front in the points table before the error was eventually spotted by the governing body and was later rectified.
Team India to face Australia in Test Series in February
Though the error was made by the apex cricket council, it is worth mentioning that India have the chance of making it to the top spot if they beat the Aussies in the forthcoming red-ball series. Australia will tour of India to play a four-match Test series scheduled to commence on February 9.
India recently emerged victorious against neighbours Bangladesh 2-0 in a Test series away from home. Adding to that, India are yet to confirm their spot in the summit clash of the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 cycle.
On the other hand, with back-to-back wins against England, the West Indies and South Africa, the Aussies are riding high on their success and are one step away from cementing their spot in the finals of the ICC event. However, a complete series sweep against India in February would mean that the side would be on the backfoot and might lose the spot in the finals.
That said, both sides will be looking for results in their favour as they clash for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy next month. Cementing their places in the finals of the red-ball event will be their top priority and assuming India are able to clinch the series, they will surpass Australia in the Test rankings.
