The first round of the 2022 T20 World Cup is slated to start on October 16 with the first match to be played between Sri Lanka and Namibia. Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a list of five young players emerging talents who might leave their mark in the upcoming tournament.
All five players are from associate teams participating in the tournament including United Arab Emirates, Scotland, Netherlands, and Namibia. While two players are from UAE, the rest of other three players are from one each other mentioned countries.
The wicketkeeper-batter from UAE Vriitya Aravind has been performing extremely well for his team lately. He was the player of the tournament and leading run-scorer of the T20 World Cup Qualifier A. Aravind also scored a 76-ball century on a sluggish pitch against Namibia in a 50-over match which is his highest score. The 20-year-old will look to do his best in the upcoming matches.
Second, on the list is Karthik Palaniapan Meiyappan from UAE. Karthik played a crucial role for his side during the Qualifier A matches. To note, the leg-spinner scalped a total of five wickets across three games and he is known for his excellent accuracy with the ball.
Netherlands' Bas De Leede also makes it to the list
The third on the list is Brandon McMullen from Scotland who is known to be a 'genuine' all-rounder. McMullen uses his height as an advantage to gain bounce with the ball. He is also more than handy with the bat as he has previously shown in the domestic circuit. The 22-year-old provides Scotland with an option to be versatile in any role.
Bas de Leede made his debut for the Netherlands in the last T20 World Cup in 2021. The batter struggled to show his true form as struck only 228 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.72, and a strike rate of 101.78. All that changed after the T20 WC as Leede has played seven knocks since then and smashed 289 runs, striking at 123 and averaging 72.25.
Divan la Cock from Namibia might get a chance to show his talent in the tournament opener of the T20 World Cup as his side will face Sri Lanka. La Cock bust shot to the limelight after he scored a blistering 123* from just 59 balls, and 11 sixes in a domestic tournament in 2020.
Here are five emerging players named by ICC to shine in T20 World Cup 2022: Divan la Cock, Bas de Leede, Brandon McMullen, Karthik Meiyappan, Vriitya Aravind
