ICC names Sana Mir as ambassador of Women's T20 World Cup Qualifier

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has named legendary Pakistan captain Sana Mir, as ambassador for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier, which will be held at the Tolerance Oval and Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi from Thursday, April 25. The 38-year-old, who boasts 226 international appearances for Pakistan, including 137 as captain, will closely monitor the performances of the 10 teams and their players throughout the tournament.

The former cricketer anticipates fierce competition for the two spots in the final for the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh, scheduled for later this year. She expresses excitement after being named as ambassador and eagerly awaits the competitive women's cricket action where teams vie for advancement to the marquee event.

“Other than the big qualification opportunity for two teams, the tournament will provide excellent exposure to the Associate Member teams and their players. The women’s game has become more and more competitive in recent years and the 10 nations involved in the Qualifier possess a number of quality players," Sana Mir was quoted as saying on the ICC website.

She brings a wealth of experience from participating in numerous qualifying events for Pakistan as captain and player. The 38-year-old expressed her aim to engage with the various teams during the tournament to offer guidance on managing the pressure of events like these. Reflecting on her journey, she cherishes some memories, notably from the 2008 edition of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier, where her outstanding 70 runs and nine wickets earned her the joint Player of the Series award.

“My aim is to talk to the various teams and players during the Qualifier and help guide them on how to deal with the pressure of these events and what it takes to succeed. Pakistan had a great record in these events, and I in particular have fond memories of the 2008 edition of the 50 over World Cup qualifier event that I played,” she continued.
