The International Cricket Council (ICC) shortlisted nominees to celebrate the cricketers who were outstanding on the world stage during the calendar year. This includes the women’s emerging cricketer of the year 2022 wherein four players were nominated for the award.
The year saw some terrific performances in both the Women’s and Men’s matches with high-octane action in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand, and the massive event of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup held in Australia.
A total of four players were shortlisted for the category of Women’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year 2022 that included the likes of two batting stars and two pacers. Of the four, two Indians in Renuka Singh and Yastika Bhatia featured in the list, have the potential to claim the award. The other two comprised Australia’s Darcie Brown and Alice Capsey of England for their phenomenal outings this year.
26-year-old Renuka Singh amassed 40 wickets in 2022 in just 29 matches across the two white-ball formats. Renuka proved to be a difficult pacer to target by the Australia batters in the recently concluded five-match T20I series in India. The pacer is likely to become a mainstay for her side considering her top performances and will be one of the most dependable bowlers the national side will look up to.
Darcie Brown registered 24 international wickets this year which included 12 T20I wickets, 10 ODI wickets, and two Test wickets. The Australia pacer proved to be instrumental in their trophy-winning campaign in the Cricket World Cup as she relished picking two three-wicket hauls against heavyweight- New Zealand and India.
England’s Alice Capsey scored 234 T20I runs at a decent strike rate of 127.86 and also added a wicket to her name. Furthermore, she also has 80 runs in the ODI format this year at a strike rate of 94.11 for the Three Lions. Perhaps her most memorable game came against South Africa when the batter came in at no.3 and hit seven fours and a maximum to score a stunning 50 runs off just 37 balls. She made her debut at just 17 years of age taking international cricket with aplomb.
Yastika Bhatia stitched an all-important 130-run partnership with Mithali Raj at the Eden Park against Australia which went down as a highlight in her career. She has been a consistent performer in the 50-over game having scored 376 ODI runs at a strike rate of 73.29. Yastika will look to cement her spot in the national setup with her dominating performances.
