‘If it is written in my destiny, then I will go for it’ - Shikhar Dhawan opens up on joining politics ahead of 2024 General Elections

Flamboyant batter Shikhar Dhawan will be seen leading the Punjab Kings in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League. However, ahead of that, the southpaw opened up and spoke about the opportunity of joining politics in the near future.

Notably, the 37-year-old didn’t cancel out but instead stated that he doesn’t have a plan as of now but may consider it if everything goes accordingly. The Delhi-born cricketer also stated that he hasn’t talked to anyone about this but will give his 100% if he ends up joining any of the political parties.

“Right now, I don't have such plans, but if it is written in my destiny, then definitely I will go for it. Whichever field I will go, I will be giving my 100 per cent and I know that success is certain for me. I have been working hard since the age of 11, and every field has a similar success mantra. The advantage of playing cricket is that it's a team game, and you know when you have to step out and step in. It's not always necessary to always go ahead and step out,” Dhawan was quoted as saying by NDTV.

“So far, I haven't spoke to anyone regarding my plans of joining the politics, but you never know what is the god's will. If it is god's will, then I will definitely be achieving it,” he added.

Would have selected Shubman over me: Dhawan

After not being able to perform on a consistent basis, BCCI dropped Shikhar Dhawan from the ODI squad as the team management backed youngster Shubman Gill to replace him in the long run. With that, it was expected Dhawan’s ODI World Cup 2023 dream would be over, but to everyone’s surprise, he managed to earn a contract extension, as the governing body announced on Sunday, March 26.

Interestingly, just a couple of days prior to the announcement, Dhawan admitted that if he was the selector, he would've picked Gill over himself. He believes that the 23-year-old is currently spending more time in international cricket, and thus, he deserves more opportunities.

“I feel the way Shubman is (playing). Like he was playing two formats and performing well in Tests and T20s. He was playing more matches in the international circuit, and I wasn't... If I were the selector then definitely would have give the chance to Shubman. Would have selected Shubman over Shikhar,” Dhawan said.
