'If my country needs me, I will be available' - Imad Wasim on unretirement plans for T20 World Cup
Imad Wasim, Islamabad United's slow left-arm spinner, spearheaded the attack, claiming a remarkable five-wicket haul in the PSL 2024 final against Multan Sultans.
Pakistan star all-rounder Imad Wasim has recently hinted at a potential turnaround of his international retirement. Notably, the 35-year-old has emerged as a wildcard addition to Pakistan's ICC Men's T20 World Cup squad despite calling time on his international career in November 2023.
As quoted by the International Cricket Council (ICC), shortly after Islamabad United's triumph in the 2024 Pakistan Super League (PSL) final, Wasim revealed that he would be available if the national team required his services. The cricketer also revealed that the current T20I skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi had reached out to him following his retirement, and the former told him that they would discuss it after the conclusion of the PSL.
“I made a name for myself while playing for Pakistan and if my country needs me, I will be available. If not, I have no issues with that. Shaheen called me after I retired, but I told him that we will talk after PSL,” Wasim said after the game.
Wasim stars for Islamabad United in PSL 2024 final
Islamabad United showcased a commanding performance, outplaying Multan Sultans to win the PSL title for the third time. The final showdown held at the National Bank Stadium, Karachi on March 18, saw the United secure a narrow two-wicket victory which also marked the Sultans' third consecutive defeat in the PSL final.
The slow left-arm spinner, spearheaded the attack, claiming a remarkable five-wicket haul in the first innings of the game. He finished with excellent figures of 5/23 and helped United to restrict the opponents to 159 runs. Later, Martin Guptill scored a fifty as United chased down the target on the final delivery.

Courtesy of his phenomenal performance in the final, Wasim set a new record becoming the first cricketer in PSL history to take a fifer. In addition, the 35-year-old now holds the record for the best bowling figures in a PSL final, surpassing Lahore Qalandars captain Shaheen Shah Afridi's previous record of 4/51 against the Sultans in the 2023 final.
