'If we get a good start, then why not?' - Ishan Kishan on possibility of 300-plus totals for SRH in IPL 2025

In Match No. 33 of the IPL 2025, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are set to face the five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) in Mumbai on April 17. Ahead of the all-important clash, SRH’s top-order batter Ishan Kishan acknowledged that scoring 300 runs in an innings in a T20 game is not something a team can plan for or expect to execute deliberately.

The left-handed batter explained that there usually is not a specific target set during the first inning. Instead, the team assesses the situation based on how the powerplay unfolds and how the pitch behaves throughout the game.

"When you're chasing, you have a target in mind. But when you're batting first, you just play the ball. And then you decide where you can go after the first six overs and how good you are on that wicket. So I don't want to be very particular with the score. But let's see. If we get a good start, then why not?," Kishan answered JioHotstar's query of whether 300-plus total in an innings is possible.

The 26-year-old emphasised that there is not much of a difference between batting at number 3 or 4. The Patna-born cricketer explained that if he comes in during the powerplay, the focus would be on handling the pacers. However, once the powerplay ends, the approach shifts to rotating the strike and building partnerships. He added that it is important to assess how many wickets have fallen and then adapt the game plan accordingly.

"Whether you're batting at number 3 or 4, the situation is more or less the same. You just need to assess the wickets that have fallen and decide how you want to approach the game. The clarity given by the coaches makes it easier – you know your role. If you start early, you face pace bowlers and, after batting through the powerplay, you're well set to dominate the middle overs. But if you walk in around the seventh over, it's more about building a partnership and rotating strike. It’s slightly different, but I’m used to it," he added on his dynamic batting positions.

Ishan Kishan scored a century in SRH’s opening fixture against Rajasthan Royals (RR). However, since that knock, he has been fairly underwhelming with the bat for the former champions. The left-handed batter will now face his former franchise on April 17 at the Wankhede Stadium.
