India captain Rohit Sharma recently opened up his wounds of India’s ICC trophy drought since 2014 ahead of the first Test against England on Thursday, January 25. Notably, Team India have been on a tremendous run in ICC events from 2014 onwards but a title has eluded them despite qualifying for the knockout stages nine times out of the last ten tournaments.
During the aforementioned phase, India have won the most matches in ICC World events with 63 wins to their name from 92 matches. Reflecting on his captaincy tenure as a full-time skipper for team India from 2022 onwards, Sharma stated that he rues winning an ICC event. However, he also highlighted the importance of keeping a good mindset for the upcoming events as one can’t change the past.

"The last three years have been great. Except winning the finals of ICC trophies, we have won everything. That's one thing we've not been able to accomplish, but I think time will come. All we need to do is stay in a good mindset, not worry too much about the past, because you can't change the past. What you can change is what is going to come next, so all of us are quite focussed on that.,” Rohit said on JioCinema.
Further speaking ahead, Rohit recalled his dream run in the 2019 ODI World Cup and stated that his individual performance doesn’t give much joy if the team doesn’t lift the trophy in the end.
"I wanted to bring about a certain change, players going out there and playing with a lot of freedom. I wanted to take the statistical side of cricket out of this team. We are playing our hearts out Numbers are overrated. In India, we do talk a lot about numbers and all of that. I got five hundreds in the 2019 World Cup, but we still lost. The hundreds don't matter,” he added.

Rohit Sharma scored 648 runs in ODI World Cup 2019
Notably, the Indian opener finished as the leading run-scorer of the ODI World Cup 2019 with 648 runs to his name from nine innings at an average of 81 with a record five hundreds (most in a single edition) and one fifty. However, despite his dream run, India crashed out of the tournament following a defeat against New Zealand in the first semi-final and failed to lift the trophy.

“If you don't win trophies, I don't think those 5-6 hundreds make too much sense. Team sport is all about winning trophies, not about individual accomplishments," he concluded.
Meanwhile, having recently made a comeback to the T20I side after 14 months, Rohit will be eager to inspire his side to a win in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 scheduled to be played in the West Indies and USA from June 01.
